Question- How do I make a fog machine for Halloween or special effects that has low lying fog on the ground?

Answer- You can use an ultrasonic mist maker in combination with a glycol fog machine. The mister sits in a large tank of water where the water mist accumulates and is held. The glycerin fog from a fog machine gets shot in from a pipe in the top of the box, mixes with the water vapor, then exits from a side pipe where a blower gently helps move things along down a long flex pipe to wherever the effect is desired. It works way better than traditional ice chillers because the effect never diminishes as long as the mister is running, unlike ice chillers that will stop working once the ice melts, which does not take very long. The theory is that the mist is making the fog more dense by adding moisture to it, which is clinging to the molecules of glycerin and making them heavier. Not sure if the science to that theory holds up, but whatever it does, it works. Question-

Hey this might sound crazy but we breed Hornworms for reptiles and we keep the moths in giant grow tents. The moths need like 85% humidity so we have a home made fogger plumbed up the water lines and a stovepipe going into the cages. Problem is that it gets dusty in there from wing dust so some scales and airborne stuff ends up down the stove pipe and into the water reservoir which over time is absolutely disgusting. So I wanted to find a good way to filter the water and still be able to easily access the reservoir to service the ultrasonic but also be able to service the filter as the filters are likely going to have to be changed one a week at a minimum.

I was hoping you would maybe have some ideas on filters or could point me in the right direction

Hey Justin, great to hear from you! We have a similar problem with our mushroom growers and the spores getting into the water. Many of them just cut a piece of filter material and place it between the fan and the blade guard, and that usually does the trick.

Choosing a size for outdoor fountains

I have a 30 x 15 saltwater pool and interested in ordering a mister that would create a really nice flow of fog. Which size is best, and is there ANY concern for the mister causing damage to the pool's surface?

I also have a fountain that I think would require 2 smaller misters....fountain is about 20-25 sq ft.

Hi Cheryl,

Good to hear from you! First off, let me say if you plan to swim in the pool, I would remove the mister from the water. It's just a matter of grabbing the mist head and setting it on the pool deck. Or, at a minimum, have it on a gfi outlet for safety.
Swimming with electronics isn't good. :-)

With that said, there's no problem with the unit ruining the pool. It's just providing ultrasonic vibration to create fog from the water.

The size really depends on how much for you want in the pool or fountain. The fog will settle within in the lip of the pool or fountain. Wind an air movement will blow it up and out. Either of our 12 Disc units would be good for this setup. I would probably put 2 units in different areas in your pool, but again, it's a matter of the amount of effect your looking for. The fountain could probably be well done with a 6 disc unit or two 5 disc units.

John L here, aka Possum Bottom Farms.

I've got your mister set up and working. I just wanted to drop you a line and let you know it's working beautifully! I used a 30 gallon open head barrel and mounted the fan on the lid using a 4" black plastic drain pipe fitting. The fan is mounted to the fitting, and then the fitting snaps into the hole I cut in the lid. I figured it was better to blow air into the drum, rather than pull all the moisture through the fan. The outlet ports are fitted with 2" PVC slip joint threaded couplers and screw into holes I cut in the lid. Using 2" fittings in the lid allows me to set 1 1/2" 45 degree fittings loose in the 2: fittings to direct the humid flow where I need it. I have it on a humidistat, so it cycles on and off as needed. It seems to run about three times an hour for maybe 5 minutes and is having no trouble keeping the humidity at a constant 90% in my fruiting room with no condensation issues on the mushrooms. One puck seems to work just great for a 12'x16'x 8' room. I'm planning to use the other two with a similar set up in my mushroom hoop house next spring.

Hi,

Great to hear from you. For converting a turbo cloner to fog, you can easily do this using the single disc mist maker kit. Just use the water level to raise the fog up to the cuttings. You don't have to run a cycle, but watch you're water temps. As you know, some heat is good for cuttings, but If they get too high, reduce the run times. It'll take a few minutes to build up a heavy amount of fog, but after that you can test cycles to see what works as a maintenance cycle for your setup. You just need to make sure the cuttings stay damp! Good luck!!!

I plan on using this in a carnivorous plant terrarium, I must use distilled water or it can kill my plants. I know the manual says not to, but if I keep an eye on the water level will it be ok? or is distilled water a no no?

You can actually use very close to distilled water.

12 PPM is the lowest we recommend. As long as the mist maker has steady contact, and doesn't stutter the mist output

I need a little help with my nutrients and I'm hoping that you can help. I currently have the full complement of Advanced Nutrients products, and I need to know how much of the manufacturer's suggested dosage I should be using. I made a trial run with a few plants and pretty much tortured them with all of the changes to the nutrient strength. I contacted the company and they don't even know how to use their own nutrients (Crazy!). I read in some blogs where some people are using anywhere from 15% to 30% of the manufacturer's suggested dosage. Can you tell me what dosage works for you? Also, can you tell me what nutrient's you use and the amounts that you use?

I'm ready to germinate more seeds, so hopefully you can respond soon. Thanks for your help.

Hi,

I recommend GH Flora Nova, or any clear, water soluble fertilizer. Beginning you should try to stay around 400, increasing to 700 after 10 days.

In bloom 800 to 1100 PPM depending on what works for you.

Last week of bloom I would drop to less than 400 and sometimes don't even add any nutes, just empty the tanks as much as possible then refill with R/O water.

I live in the Portland area and will be using the fogger for humidity control (target would be 55-75%) and some cooling in the Summer. The interior of the greenhouse is 8' x 12' and about 8' tall, hoop house style so the total area is about 760 cubic feet. I'm still getting everything dialed in so I can't tell you exactly how many air changes per hour but I'm guessing 1 or 2 a day in the Winter. Summer might be 1 an hour, but possibly more depending on the heat load. I will be using a mist system to also help with watering and cooling load. My questions are:Do you think the 5 disc fogger will be adequate for this area? Have you ever built a system from a 55 gallon drum? I have access to a plastic 55 gallon drum and would like to use this if possible.Any idea on how much cooling I could expect to get from a fogging system? Would more fogger discs get more cooling effect? Hope this ended up with the right person. I really like the products offered on the website. It took me a while to find you online but it looks like these complete kits you offer and the water resistant fan are perfect for my intended application.Thanks in advance for your input.

Thanks for contacting us! Jim's out for the week, but I can definitely help you out. A five head should do well for you in both cooling, and humidifying.

A 55 gallon drum would be perfect. The more water you have, the less the water is heated by the mister. Which is a good thing.

I want to say the temp in the people that have reported back have had around a 10-12 degree drop. I say with with caution though. I've never done it personally. The more water you add, the cooler it'll be for sure. If you want to add a bigger unit, you could add a humidistat to control the whole thing. Another benefit to the bigger unit is more stable humidity levels. With an air exchange, it'll snap back very quick.

Got our 3-head kit and fan last week and I wanted to write to tell you how pleased we are! Arrived 2 days from ordering. Took less than 20 minutes to get it up and running (including time it took for the Hubs to gather the hole saw and drill). It works like a champ!

We have a 48 square foot sunroom where I grow mostly cloud-forest orchids (miltoniopsis, masdevallias) and was using ultra-sonic baby room nebulizers trying to keep them happy. Your unit effortlessly provides the 70% - 90% humidity these finicky plants require. With the windows and skylight closed, I only need to run the unit 15 minutes every 2 hours. When the temp reaches 70, I open the windows, door and skylight and run the unit continuously (up to 6 hours) to maintain 70%.

Plants are thriving and I'm sharing my experience with everyone in my local orchid society.

Hi,

Great to hear from you. The humidifiers are pretty easy to build. You can get pretty fancy with it, or just Stay basic.

You will need a 120mm waterproof fan

In less you have a very small enclosure, then you could get away with that 80 mm. You can also use a auto fill mini float

To control the water level in your Reservoir, And automatically keep it full.

If you want to precisely control the humidity in your greenhouse, you can use one of our humidistats

. This will automatically turn your humidifier on and off +/-3% of the preset humidity level.

If you don't want to splurge on the humidistat, you can purchase our fog output controller.

This allows you to reduce the output of humidity so you can try to find a nice balance that keeps you around where you need to be.

Really, really happy with ya'lls company; I received my 12-head and fan faster than expected and they work great. I'm ecstatic to have humidity in my house now - went from somewhere in the teens to over 50% with this system and your YouTube idea for a container. Some common questions... 1: I want to make a couple of these to keep my recording studio humid. This doesn’t look any different, tech-wise, form a cool mist humidifier, so it should work fine, correct?2: # of heads:Noise is a concern for me.

It is the same technology as a cool mist humidifier. But store bought humidifiers are typically the 16mm brass discs, and put out a lot less humidity, while needing clean often.

The smaller units are quieter, but it is very minimal. The noise is pretty much just bubbling water. A 9 head may be too much fog, unless your studio is pretty big. A 9-12 head can usually humidify a standard house.

When you lower the voltage, the noise reduction is minimal, but like I said, it's not very noisy to start.

You need a fan to get the fog out of the container. You can put it in a container without a top on it, but you need to point some type of fan at the fog or 90% of the fog will sit in the bottom of the container. The mist makers also splash a little, so if you don't have a lid, you will likely make a mess around the humidifier.

One heads are best for cloning, not for full term growth. You can use them to supplement another growing technique such as drip feed, NFT, or Shallow DWC. You will need a 3 head at least for a 5gal bucket grow.

You also don't want to put the mist maker into the container with plant, the roots will interfere with the water fogger. The mist maker also warms the water a little which isn't good. You can pipe it in with the nutramist like machine I make on youtube here.

You do need to cycle the unit, and can just use a simple timer for hydroponics. Also, the one heads have a mist controller available on my mist maker accessories page.

The Single disk Ultrasonic Mist Maker Kit comes with everything you need make mist. Float/buoy, extra Teflon 20mm replacement discs, transformer, and single head unit.

You can use RO without a problem.... usually. If it is very clean water, the water sensor may act finicky. You can just cut it with a little tap water and be ok. The fan has a speed control that can affect output, and you can also use a speed controller.

The only problem you will have with the water sensor failing, is the unit will not run. You won't have a problem burning it up by it not shutting off.

For one room I would use a 3 head unit. For a 1000 szft home, a 5,6, or 9 dependent on how much you need to raise your humidity, and for 1000+ I would use a 6,9 or 12.

I think you will be very happy with our systems. They produce a dry fog that will not wet your leaves.

From what you say, I think you will need a 12 head unit with a fan. Here is a video that shows how to build the humidifier for your Orchid Greenhouse.

Yes, They use the same technology, but they are the small 16mm cheap unit, and don't last very long. The mist maker is less effective the thicker the water/ oil is. But in short, yes our mist makers will work to diffuse essential oils.

Yes we ship worldwide. I have shipped before, but you may be subject to customs charges. It depends on your country.

Are you planning on growing with aeroponics, and fog, or just fogponics?

If you are using only fog, you will need a large mist maker such as a 12 head. They need to have alot of fog to get enough nutrients and water to the plant. A mix of fog and drip is good, or fog and DWC if you would like to use a 3 head.

You will need to keep the mist maker separate from the root zone so you do not overheat the roots and cause root rot. The fan is used to move the fog into the root some, but it will help cool the fog by introducing cool air into the fog stream.

You can use one of our mini floats to help maintain the water level in your external container that contains the mist maker. This will probably be the only other accoriy that you may need.

Hi there,

I would go with an exterior unit if you are growing full term. The roots can obstruct the fogging discs. You can find instructions on my youtube channel "how to buid a nutramist" If you are running a drip feed as well, you can get away with a three head. If not, I would run a 12, or two 5's. You have to make sure the root zone is packed with fog. It has to be able to support the tap roots thirst :-)

A cloner is easy and I recommend a 1 head or or 3 depending one the size of container. You can put it inside the root zone, and the small amount of heat generated will help the clones propagate.

Hi,

A 3 head would do great in a 5 gallon. You don't want to have the unit inside of the root zone when growing to a mature tree though. Eventually the roots will interfere with the unit. One of the best ways is to use gravity to feed the bucket with fog. Or, an external system with a fan on a very low setting creating an light positive pressure to push the fog into the root zone via a 1" or larger hose.

Sounds like you have some awesome stuff going on. I see you're in New Castle, I own some property, and a large green house in Grove City near Pittsburgh. I stay in Fl where its warm though :-).

I'll just try to knock out some of your questions real quick.

If you are experiencing root rot, you will have the same issue with these. You need a water chiller to keep the root zone temps down. This is soo important, and overlooked by most.

A 12 head is capable of handling a lot of area, but it is based on many things. 3" PVC tubes are best for pure fog because the root zone is small. They also work great in conjunction with a shallow water nft system.

You also want to make sure you push the fog into the root zones with as little air as possible. The more air the fan pushes, the more diluted your zone will be. You only need a little air to push it.

I understand what you are saying. I have considered doing the same. My concerns are that the higher level of airflow will help dry out the roots vs wetting them.

Too much air flow is bad for sure. I use a small 1/2 inch return that returns the condensed fog to the reservoir. Typically you will have some fog loss through the grow sites. This is ok, and is minimal.

Make sure you run the fan on the lowest possible speed to get the fog into the chamber.

Sorry for the confusion. Everytime the factory updates something on the units, they end up giving me a new output. The comparison chart on my site is correct. I keep that updated all the time.

There are a lot of factors that determine mist maker output. Water temp, amount of solids in the water, size of the container... ect.

I have comparison charts for specs on my site. I haven't done any side by side comparisons, but I personally used the 12 disc mist maker for fogponics. I used the large black tub and an 80mm fan set on low to push a heavy flow of fog.

The discs we use are lightweight ceramic, with a teflon coating. They have higher output, and resist buildup. They can be easily cleaned with vinegar allowing them to last 5000+ hours. The buildup happens on the heavy brass discs. Everything sticks to the brass like a magnet.

I think a lot of the people that have problems with fogponics is inexperienced with fog. You need a lot, and you need to pump it in with fresh air. Alot of people try to run the unit inside the root zone, and this creates heat which leads to low oxygen levels. If you pipe the fog in, you get fresh oxygen, and cool air.... The roots love it! Alot of people also try to "experiment" with smaller units, and don't get adequate fog for full term growing. Thats why nutramist supplements with a drip.

Mist makers can run in a large range of temperatures. Check out our video to see them run at both ends of the recommended temp ranges.

Mist makers can run in many different fluids. The lighter or thinner the better. Mist makers work by creating ultrasonic vibrations, and actually "blows apart" the water off of the surface. A heavy liquid will work, but it will not be as efficient.

A 12 head would do great in a 55 gallon. You don't want to have the unit inside of the root zone though. It will create too much heat and cause root rot. One of the best ways is to use an external system with a fan on a very low setting creating an light positive pressure to push the fog into the root zone via a 1" or larger hose.

Hi,

You need to make sure your res temps are not too high. 65-75F is good. You want warmth at first to start the seeds, and then it becomes your enemy. Also, make sure the roots are getting sufficient moisture, they need to be covered in the fog.
You can run the hell out of it, just watch the temps, and consider going with an external tank that pumps in the fog.

Some nutes, will turn the roots brown, but it sounds like you are battling root rot.

It will work, and work well! Stay patient.

Hi Carol,

Good to hear from you. You are correct, ultrasonic mist makers have been known to create a fine dust on surface areas if you are dealing with water that has a lot of calcium in it. Distilled water is not an option because it does not contain any trace minerals to activate the low water sensor. Something you can do, is add a reverse osmosis machine to your system. This will remove any contaminants that would cause a dust if you had Badwater.

I would recommend a twelve disc water fogger with our 80mm fully encased waterproof fans with speed control.

this should take care of your humidity problems, and if the twelve isn't enough, I can cut you a discount for repeat buyers. I can guarantee one thing though, you will not find another humidifier unit out there that gives you the kind of output my units do! :-)

It sounds like you have tons of exciting things going on! I am a huge fan of bonsai's, and orchids! I have grown a couple desert rose bonsai's myself.

Most of my knowledge comes from people like you! I talk to at least ten people a day that are trying to get something put together for their own application. Creating enough humidity in a greenhouse for orchids is a tough job! I always get complaints about Honeywell humidifier's not being able to do the job. Our mist makers put out twice the amount they do!

To be honest, I think you could probably get away with a one head, even though a 3 head would make me more money :-)

because you are not using a large amount of water, I would recommend a single reservoir/misting set up. Just use a small Tupperware and a hole saw, and follow the directions in my "how to make a home humidifier" video. I sell the 80 mm fans with a speed controller on my website below all the mist makers. if you set the fan to the lowest setting, the fog will roll out of your hose is nice and slow. You will be really happy with it. You can just set it on a timer and forget about it.

Breeding dart frogs? That's really cool. The best part about this job is meeting all kinds of new people that do stuff like this. I work with a very very large pet store down here in Florida. I could probably put you guys in contact if you want.

my recommendation would be to use the 5 gallon bucket with the mist makers inside and place the bucket at a level just above the tanks if it doesn't bother you being up that high. What can happen if you use corrugated pipe is the water will collect and start to drift back down the pipe and actually start pulling fog back down with it, even with the forced air.

I would recommend that 80 mm fan turned on the lowest setting, just enough to whisper fog into the tanks. You'll be amazed at how awesome it works, and looks.

it's great to see more people getting into the exciting, and profitable, Niche of mushroom growing. for a large room like yours I would recommend using two different units if cost is not a factor. even though our mist makers are extremely high quality, this will allow you a failsafe system. For a room that size I would recommend a nine or twelve head mist maker with a waterproof fan kit if you were to do only one unit per room. This should give you plenty of power to get your humidity up to where you need it.

I'm pretty familiar with the mycology industry. I have done long term business with many different universities mycology departments. The dry fog that our mist maker kits produce is the perfect solution for the cultivation chambers. The dry fog does not leave a slimy film on top of your mushrooms like some humidifiers may.

I have 20 gallons of liquid in a 30 gallon container and it has many little problems, from the pressure that much weight of water causes on the seals, to needing bigger and bigger air pumps to keep up with the larger amount of water, providing the dissolved oxygen needed to keep roots healthy.

I have looked at your website, and was hoping you could embellish on the chart a little bit, and explain what size foggers you would use for what volume a chamber, maybe show a few more example gardens that would benefit from the conversion to foggers.

Right now, I have a 31 gallon tote in a tent under 400 watts. Usually, I have 6 plants in a room, each under 600 watts of light, 8x10ft total, but I have never run my larger rooms with hydro:

How do I apply foggers to the tent garden, then, how to apply it to a much larger garden space: bigger tubs or trash cans, large fiberglass sewer tubes, 10 ft long, with a fogger and reservoir connected to each run, under 3 lights each?

It sounds like you have a nice little set up.

I would try the method in my vids "make your own nutramist" and pipe in the fog from that. You can use it as an add on, or If you want to go 100% full term, (you will need a 9 or 12 disc), you will be able to switch easily. You can then recirculate the waste nutes.

I have been working on a NFT/fog system that I haven't released yet, but I have some idea's about running a pump into a container that has the mist maker. It will have an overflow area for the mist and water to "run off" down through a 6" or 8" pvc with the plants.

I'm pretty sure the NutraMist is a 1, 3, or 5 head. That's why they need a drip system to supplement feeding. If you want to grow hundred percent fog you should, depending on how many plants, invest in a five, nine, or 12. Roots love oxygen and air, and you can get a ton of both with fog. You just can't be scared of it! Let me know a little bit more about your set up, and I will get you set up right.

My setup is (7) 6"x10' PVC tubes with 7 plant locations/segment = 49
I have a drip and internal sprayers, and use Canna Nutes.... Problem is in a 50 Gallon reservoir that sucks up a boat load of my expensive add on's like Boost and Rhizotonic ($200-300/cycle). So I was wanting to put the booster nutrients into a fog and keep the standard veg and flower nutrients in the drip and spray, which would cut down my consumption used in my 50 gallon and fog the expensive stuff to the roots.....

once I get fog going to my grow I would like to add fog to my Mothers and Clones

What do you think? You are the fog master...... how much fog would be a sufficient and at what dilution ratio? currently 7.6-15ml/gallon

Hey man,

That's a great idea for sure! I think what you are going to need to consider is how much you want to dose, and for how long. Your uptake will be up to 50% higher and more direct with the fogger, so you should start easy. It's like mainlining nutrients :-) The three head will nebulize about .4 gallons an hour, for a supplement, that would probably be the one I throw in there first. I would also run it opposite of your other cycle.

As for the mother and clones.... There is no better way to get your clones going than fog. I guarantee it!

Building a Fogponics system out of Mist Makers is easy!

One of my awesome customers provided me with the drawings of his intended fogponics system.

His intention is to grow six tomato plants to full term using only fog. He has two options that he is looking at.

The first option is to use the float that is provided in your mist maker kit, and option B is to make a separate reservoir with a pump and overflow hole to control water height.

Both of his ideas look great, but let's go over both of them to see the pros and cons of both.

Building a Fogponics Unit

Option A: Float and mist maker in the reservoir.

This is a very easy set up. The mist maker and float set within the main nutrient reservoir. This setup is great for smaller plants when you are using a one, three, or maybe five head mist maker.

When using a larger mist maker there are some concerns about heating up your nutrients. The fog that travels into your root chamber is typically near room temperature because it is being forced into the root zone with fresh air.

It is also important to have the return drain submerged into the nutrient solution so that you create only one way for the fog to reach the roots. If not, the fan will create equal pressure in both output holds resulting in very little nutrients reaching your root zone.

Option B: No float used with an external fog chamber

This is a great option as well. Using a pump and an overflow keep the mist maker from sitting in your reservoir water, and will reduce fog output temps.

My advice to the grower was something that I have been thinking about for a while now. If he were to build the unit so that the overflow valve discharged into the PVC pipe, then he would also be utilizing the NFT technique.

The fog that is entering the pipe at the same time will remain suspended in the root zone long after the NFT cycle finishes. This will give the hydroponic grower the best of both worlds; fogponics and NFT are known to be some of the best hydroponic growing techniques out there! Let me know what you think!

Absolutely not! Aside from superior customer service, our mist makers have many upgraded components. The quickest way to tell them apart is the red power indicator light on the silver head. What size Mist Maker do I need for my greenhouse or grow room?
This is our most common question... and this is the response you'll get from us when you email. If you still need help choosing a size, please email us after reading through this carefully... When emailing, let me know you read this, and include the size of your room, what the room is made out of (drywall, cement, plastic), air exchange level, ambient humidity, target humidity

Choosing the right size Mist Maker depends on a few different things:
ambient humidity, target humidity, air exchange, and the type of material your room is constructed of all plays a part.

A lower ambient humidity will increase the need for more discs, as well as a higher target humidity. The amount of air exchange you have will play the biggest part in deciding which size you need. If you are constantly bringing in new air, you have to work much harder to bring up the humidity. Rooms constructed of concrete tend to absorb moisture for quite some time before leveling out. This can increase your need for a bigger Mist Maker as well.

With low/no air exchange, a smaller unit can be used. It may take longer to reach your target humidity level, but as long as drier areas not being introduced to the room, a smaller unit will suffice.

With that said, I typically recommend a larger unit such as a 6 to 12 disc Mist Maker for larger area's like shipping containers and green houses. It is better to have a capable unit that runs much less, than a inadequate unit that has to run 24/7. Mist Maker's can heat the water that they are operating in, and heat can damage electronics. Very long run times in small amounts of water can push the max operating water temperature of 105°F. It's better to have a unit that runs for an hour on/hour off than 8 on, one off.

For example, in a 4x6' growing tent with no/low air exchange, I'd probably use a single disc mister to achieve up to 100% humidity.

A 10x10 room with high air exchange, a/c, and lighting would probably need a 6 disc unit at least, but could use a 12 disc as well, it just won't at 100%.

A 40' shipping container with low/ moderate air exchange would probably need a 12 disc, or two 6 disc units.

If my projects life depended on the humidity, I'd use two units running at half the time. That way you have some redundancy in case of a problem

There are so many variables that it's hard to actually say with certainty what you need. Most online charts don't take 90% of the factors into account. Hence why so many of my customers have already purchased, and came up short on the store bought units.

How do I control my output/ what all do I need to buy?

The normal kit alone will get you started, but there are different options for controlling the output of your Mist Maker.

We offer fog output controllers to turn the fog level up and down, as well as humidistats. Humidistats will automatically control your humidity within 3% of your target level. The machine automatically turns The Mist Maker's power on and off when needed.

For most humidification projects, it is recommended that you use our 120 mm, fully encased, waterproof fan in order to efficiently push the fog out into the room. Our smaller 80 mm fan is geared towards small applications like tanks, and grow tents.

How long can I run a mist maker?

Max recommended run time is 8 hours on, 1 hour off. However the run time is largely dependant on the water temperature. 105F is the max water temp. You need to keep it under this temperature, whether it is through shorter run times, or more water in the container that it is running in. For example, if you put a 12 disc water fogger in 100 gallons of water, you could run it 24/7, but if you put it in 5 gallons of water, you would need to shorten the run time to probably 2 hours, or risk exceeding the max temp which will shorten the lifespan dramatically.
How does a Ultrasonic Mist Maker work?

House of Hydro ultrasonic water foggers use high output ceramic discs, not the slow speed metal discs that collect buildup. The ceramic discs vibrate at an ultrasonic frequency to silently create microscopic (< 5 micron) water droplets. Ultrasonic humidifiers make a cool fog that is great for reptiles, greenhouses, and home humidification. Mist Makers use a piezoelectric transducer for a high frequency mechanical oscillation just below the surface of the water. This vibration creates a very fine, very dry fog that is instantly evaporated into the air. Water foggers do not use dry ice, fog liquid, heat, chemicals.
Are Mist Makers safe?

Yes, they can be placed just about anywhere. The fog is dry so it can be used around electrical appliances and animals.

Do not touch the discs while the unit is in operation. The ultrasonic vibrations from the fogger hurt! Touching the disc while it's running will feel almost like a shock or burn that you can feel all the way to the bone. I know, I've tried.

Will Mist Makers carry fertilizer, or anti-fungals in the Fog?

Water droplets from a Mist Maker will carry anything that the water contains, unlike the humidifiers that heat the water. Minerals, nutrients, and anti-fungals from the reservoir will be carried in the fog. This allows for excellent results while using a mist maker for fogponics, greenhouse humidification and sterilization. How can you argue with these results!
How do I use "heavy" oil's/ additives with a mist maker?

You can use many different oils with a mist maker. These oils can increase surface tension of the water and reduce the output. To help correct this, you can use a plant safe product called Coco-Wet to greatly improve performance.
How much water does my Mist Maker need to run?

There is a rubber black piece on the pond fogger that is a low-water sensor. This must be almost completely submerged to operate. The optimum operating depth is between 60 ml and 80 ml. The pond fogger must be kept near the surface of the water for proper operation. The included float will help keep the Mist Maker at the proper level.
How do I clean Mist Makers discs?

Here is how to properly maintain your mist makers discs:
Take the disc key that you received free with your order with the replacement discs.
Unscrew the silver retaining rings.
Remove the white disc by popping it out with a soft instrument.
Soak the discs in a small jar of white vinegar for a few hours and then wipe them clean!

The factory life span of Mist Maker discs is approximately 5,000 hours. This can be reduced or improved based on your water quality, and whether or not you maintain your Mist Maker by cleaning the discs.
Can I use Aromatherapy Oils with a Cool Mist Humidifier?

Yes, you can use aromatherapy oils with your Mist Maker. Use the oil sparingly to release the fragrance into your home.
Why does my Mist Maker have reduced fog output?

A reduction in fog output is usually caused by a build up on the discs. Our ceramic discs with Teflon coating will help solve this problem. They greatly reduce the build up and clean easily. If you have reduced output from your fogger, buy new ceramic/ teflon discs here, or clean them using the steps given above in the question - How do I clean the Mist Makers discs?
Why can't I use the cheap LED mist makers?
I stumbled across this pic today. Aside from having the low output 16mm disc, the Led's are causing algae growth in the nutrient water due to all the light. This will cause a myriad of problems with a hydroponic grow.
Are Mist Makers safe for fish tanks?
Absolutely!

Ultrasonic pond foggers can be used safely in aquariums with fish and other creatures. The smaller units do not raise water temps at all and create a mist on the top of your fish tank. We have a local distributor that owns a huge pet store. He uses water foggers in all his open top aquariums with no problems. One Heads and Three Head mist makers work best for fish tanks.
Can I use a mist maker like a reptifogger?

Yes! The humidity created by a Mist Maker is great for reptiles. You can make your own reptifogger with a small container and a fan. You can also just use gravity to drop the mist into the tank. It's that easy!
Can Mist Makers clean the air in your home?

Yes! The mist produced by the water fogger is negatively charged. Dust an allergens in the air are positively charged. The two particles bind together and become heavy enough to fall to the floor where they can be easily vacuumed up! I have a customer that has a large petstore... with puppies using shredded newspaper for bedding. It makes a ton of dust that lingers in the air, and causes the place to stink. He has a 12 disk mist maker with a 120mm Hydro Flow Fan that does the trick!
Are these Mist Makers the same technology as Nutramist?

Yes, the mist makers we sell use the same technology that is used in a Nutramist cyclone.
How do I make my own Nutramist for fogponics?

Making your own Nutramist unit is easy:
Find an airtight container such as a five gallon bucket.
Drill a hole for a micro-waterproof fan and a hole for your output hose.
You can make a separate nutrient reservoir by connecting an external 5 gallon bucket via a mini float that keeps the main units water level at the correct level.
What size mist maker do I need to grow with fogponics? How do I grow with fog?
One head mist makers are incredible for cloning, but not for full term growth. You can use smaller units to supplement another growing technique such as drip feed, NFT, or Shallow DWC. You will need a 3 head at least for a 5gal bucket grow, bigger is always better if your growing full term with fog.

You also don't want to put the mist maker into the container with plant, the roots will interfere with the water fogger. The mist maker also warms the water a little which isn't good. You can pipe it in with the Fogponics machine that I make on youtube.

You do need to cycle the unit, and can just use a simple timer for hydroponics. You also might need a mist output controller, or reservoir water level float to automatically keep your water tank full automatically. They are available on my mist maker accessories page.

Using the 80mm fan, turn the fan speed down as low as possible. Too much air dilutes the fog, and drys out your roots.
Can I use a mist maker for raising humidity in a greenhouse?
Yes! The dry fog produced by mist makers is perfect for greenhouse humidification. A huge portion of my customers are growing Orchids. They love the units, as they don't soak the plants or equipment and cause mold growth!

How can I disable the alarm on my Willhi Humidistat?

How do you turn the hi alarm off?

I can get to the AH screen on the control

The directions tell me to set it at 0 to disable the alarm mode.

I can set it to 1 or 100 and everything in between but not 0

You may be overshooting your upper range by introducing too much humidity too quickly. This could be a reason for the alarm to keep going off. The three disc unit is the right choice for that size tent, but it does put a good bit of humidity in there quickly.The humidistat might just not be responding quickly enough to avoid it overshooting your range.

This is the information Willhi gaver me for disabling the alarm on a humidistat.

The ON/OFF data should be set according to the range you want (80~90%). But please set AL= 0, AH=100 (the default setting) to disable the alarm.

I have a question regarding humidor design. The picture I have attached is my current design. I use it to grow mushrooms. Currently I need more air flow so I am going to use a 700 cfm fan. The question I have is this. If I replace the current fan that is on the tote with a fan that blows at 700 cfm could that increase the rate that the discs need to be replaced?

My thoughts behind this are this. If that mush air is hitting the water in the tote it will produce a rippling effect. This could possibly cause intermittent times were the discs are running with not water on them due to the ripples thus reducing the lifespane.

Does that make sense? Or am I way off base. The reason I ask is because I was going to mount the fan to the wall and replace the fan that is on the tote with a 60 cfm ducting fan to create a softer push of humidity through the pvc path that you see coming from the far end of the tote. That would in turn reduce or eliminate the waves in the tote completely. That would be connected to a wye pvc piece that would have the 700 cfm fan connected to it from the bottom combining the air with the humidity being pushed from the tote.

I could be over thinking this entire situation that's why I decided to send an email before performing the surgery to that side of the wall. Figured you have worked with these units long enough to know what works and what doesnt. Thank you for your time and sorry for the book.

Hi, good to hear from you. You're definitely on the right track. The other concern we have is it reduces the efficiency of the mist maker pretty substantially. The high rate of air flow will reintegrate a lot of the fog back into the water and reduce your overall output. You definitely don't want to have it blowing down on top of the water fogger because it will push all the water out of the way and burn up your discs quicker. I hope this helps some.

I am using one of your fogger unit for mushroom cultivation.
I am wondering if you are aware if we can use low amount of peroxide in the water to keep the water clean in the tub? They use similar technique in hydroponic to keep high level of oxygens in the water. I am wondering if peroxide can damage the fogger unit.

Absolutely! To keep your humidifier water reservoir clean, we recommend adding a ratio of 20 to 1, once a week if you're using 3% drug store strength. We also recommend considering the UV sterilizing light we sell which will also greatly extend cleaning intervals.
