Short answer: yes! Ultrasonic mist makers produce a cool, fine “dry fog” with no heat and no harsh moving parts, which makes them one of the safest and most reliable ways to add humidity to reptile, amphibian, and aquarium setups. Our Mist Makers are trusted by customers like the Atlanta Amphibian Foundation and the Sydney National Aquarium! Check out our Instagram to see all the different pictures submitted by our customers!
Here’s how to use one safely around living creatures.
Why ultrasonic fog is safe for animals
Unlike heated humidifiers, a mist maker creates fog by vibrating water at a high frequency rather than boiling it. The result is a room-temperature mist of roughly sub-5-micron droplets — there are no hot surfaces and no steam to burn or stress your animals. The fog is also “dry,” so it raises humidity without leaving everything soaking wet, which helps prevent the mold and bacterial growth that can plague warm-mist units.
Using a mist maker as a reptile fogger
For terrariums and vivariums, build a simple reptile fogger by setting the mist maker in a small water container and piping the fog into the enclosure with an 80mm waterproof fan on a low setting. Put it on a timer or a humidistat and it will hold a steady humidity level hands-free.
- Snakes & chameleons: a Single Disc Unit for smaller enclosures, or for 5'x5' or larger areas, a 3-Disc unit keeps enclosures at the humidity needed for healthy shedding.
- Dart frogs & vivariums: a single-disc unit with an 80mm fan on the lowest setting whispers fog into the tank — set it on a timer and forget it.
- Feeder & insect tents: the same setup holds high humidity for breeding; add a fan filter between the fan and guard if dust or debris fouls the water.
Are mist makers safe for fish tanks and aquariums?
Yes. Pond foggers (Ultrasonic Mist Makers) run safely in aquariums alongside fish and other creatures. The small units simply create mist on the water’s surface and don’t raise the water temperature nuch at all, so they won’t stress your tank’s inhabitants — and they double as a striking visual fog effect. For fish tanks and aquariums, 1-Disc and 3-Disc units work best for smaller tanks.
Safety tips for animal habitats
- Keep the reservoir water clean — wipe it out regularly, and consider a UV reservoir sterilizer to keep the water and fog fresh.
- Run the unit on a GFI outlet, as you would with any electrical device near water.
- Use a timer or humidistat so the habitat cycles to a steady target humidity instead of over-fogging.
