  • The humidistat or hygrometer to be calibrated

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prepare the salt solution: Place a teaspoon of table salt in a small container or bottle cap, then add a few drops of water — just enough to dampen it into a thick slurry, not dissolve it into liquid. A saturated (damp) salt solution naturally holds the air right above it at about 75% relative humidity.
  2. Seal the environment: Place the damp salt and the humidistat (or its sensor) inside a ziplock bag or airtight container, sealed tightly to create a stable environment.
  3. Wait for equilibrium: Allow the setup to sit undisturbed for at least 6 hours — overnight is even better. The relative humidity inside should stabilize at approximately 75%.
  4. Check the reading: Without opening the container, check the reading on the humidistat. If it reads 75%, it is correctly calibrated. If not, note the difference (the offset).
  5. If the device does not allow manual adjustment, remember the offset when reading humidity levels in the future.
