DIY Reptile Humidifier & Terrarium Fogger
You can build a DIY reptile fogger from an ultrasonic mist maker, a small water reservoir, and a length of tubing into the enclosure. It holds the 60–80%+ humidity tropical reptiles and amphibians need, runs cool, and costs far less than a packaged unit. Desert species don't need one — this is for humidity-loving setups.

What you need
- An ultrasonic mist maker (a 1-disc unit covers most terrariums).
- A sealed reservoir or small tote to hold water.
- A float to keep the disc at the right depth.
- Tubing to carry the fog into the enclosure, plus an optional small fan.
- A humidistat or timer to control it.
How to build it
- Sit the mist maker on its float in the reservoir, filled with clean, dechlorinated or RO water (never hotter than 120°F).
- Run tubing from the reservoir's fog outlet into the terrarium, positioned so fog disperses rather than soaking one spot of substrate.
- Plug the unit into a humidistat set to your species' target, or a timer for a night-cycle fog.
- Keep a vent or screen open so the enclosure exchanges air and doesn't stay saturated.
Match it to your species
A fogger is for humidity-loving species — crested geckos (60–80%), tree frogs, chameleons, rainforest snakes, and dart frogs and amphibians (80–100%). Arid species are the exception: bearded dragons and leopard geckos want 30–40% and should not be fogged. Set the humidistat to your animal's range, not the maximum.
