Humidistat Guide: Setup, Wiring & Choosing One

← All DIY Tutorials

A humidistat is a controller that switches your humidifier on and off automatically to hold a target humidity range. You set a high and low point, place its probe in the space, plug the humidifier into it, and it does the rest — the one part that turns a mist maker into a fully hands-off humidifier.

What is a humidistat and how does it work?

A humidistat works like a thermostat for moisture. Its sensor probe constantly reads relative humidity where you place it. When RH drops below your low set point, the humidistat powers its outlet — turning on whatever is plugged into it — and when RH climbs back to your high set point, it cuts power. Your humidifier only runs when the room actually needs moisture, which holds a tight band, saves run time, and prevents over-humidifying into condensation or mold territory.

Paired with an ultrasonic mist maker, that means precise control for mushroom fruiting rooms, grow tents, greenhouses, curing chambers, humidors, labs, and whole-home setups — see how the humidistat fits into the complete system in the interactive build diagram.

How to use a humidistat with a DIY humidifier

  • Plug the humidistat into a 120v outlet.
  • Plug the mist maker's power supply into the humidistat's outlet. The humidistat now controls when fog is made.
  • Fan: Most of the time, plug it into the humidistat too. Most humidistats, like our Willhi, have one outlet — use a plug splitter or small GFCI power strip so the fan and mist maker switch on together when the humidity hits the set lower parameter.
  • Need constant fresh air exchange in a grow tent? Run the fan on wall power instead so it moves air continuously, and let the humidistat switch only the mist maker. When the mist maker kicks on, it humidifies the incoming air. Depending on your application, some people run a second fan to draw stale air out of the grow tent. This fan goes at the bottom to pull CO2-concentrated air out.

Load limit: the Willhi humidistat is rated to a 10-amp maximum — about 1,100W at 110V (2,200W at 220V). Every House of Hydro mist maker and fan combination sits comfortably under that.

Where should the humidity probe go?

Put the probe at the height that matters — canopy level in a grow tent, shelf level in a fruiting chamber or humidor — not on the floor, where cool fog settles and reads artificially high. Keep it out of the direct fog stream and away from vents, so it reads the room's true humidity rather than a localized pocket.

Willhi vs. Inkbird: which humidistat should I choose?

  • Willhi — our recommendation for most builds. One outlet, simple set-and-go operation, and an easily replaceable sensor we ship straight from our warehouse — if a sensor ever fails, you're back up in days, no disassembly.
  • Inkbird — choose it if you need dehumidification too. Two outlets: one switches a humidifier, the other a dehumidifier, so it can hold a band from both directions. Trade-off: replacement sensors come only from the manufacturer and require disassembly to swap.

Both are solid, dependable controllers — the choice comes down to sensor serviceability (Willhi) versus dual humidify/dehumidify control (Inkbird).

Do I need a humidistat, or is the Mist Output Controller enough?

They do different jobs. A humidistat automates humidity — it reads RH and holds your range hands-free, which is what humidification setups need. The Mist Output Controller is a manual dial that turns fog volume up or down — great for special effects, and very optional for a humidifier.

What humidity should I set?

It depends on the application: mushroom fruiting runs 85–95%, grow tents 40–75% by stage, home comfort 45–55%, cigar humidors 65–72%, wine storage about 60–70%. Set your low point at the bottom of the band and the high point at the top, and the humidistat cycles your humidifier to stay inside it.
