Troubleshooting an Ultrasonic Mist Maker

Are you experiencing issues with your ultrasonic mist maker? Don't worry, we're here to help! In this guide, we will walk you through the troubleshooting process to identify and resolve any problems you may be encountering. Follow these steps to get your mist maker back up and running in no time.

Step 1: Check the Power Supply, Reset Button, or Fuse

The first thing you should do is check the power supply. Ensure that the mist maker is properly plugged into a functioning power outlet and let it sit for about 15 minutes without the silver fogging head attached. If the transformer gets warm to the touch, even slightly, it is functioning properly. If it isn't warm, check the red reset button (9 and 12 disc models), and for 5 and 6 disc models, check the fuse located under the screw cap at the front of the power supply (DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN the fuse). 

NOTE: If the fuse, or red reset button is triggered, contact us for further instruction. 

Step 2: Clean or Replace the Ceramic Disc

The ceramic disc is a crucial component of the mist maker. Over time, it can become clogged with mineral deposits or debris, or even wear out completely which can affect its performance. If there is at least some water movement over the discs, please try this step. Carefully DRY THE SILVER TRANSDUCER, before removing the ceramic disc from the mist maker and clean the discs using a soft brush or cloth with vinegar if needed (never use bleach). Take a hair dryer, and dry out the spring area under the discs to assure there is no moisture at all inside the unit. Make sure to not lose the clear O-rings under the discs. Retighten the discs firmly, but not so tight the disc key twists out of shape.

NOTE: the black rings on the new replacement discs are NOT O-rings. They are simply protective rings for the discs until they're used. 

Step 3: Check the Water Level and Float position

Low water levels or a "loose float" can cause the mist maker to malfunction. Ensure that the water level in your reservoir is sufficient for the mist maker to float freely. Make sure the two piece float is fully pressed together to assure the water sensor is deep enough in the water to operate properly. To adjust the float, flip it over, line up the tabs and press the inner donut ring up into the shell with your thumbs until fully seated. 

Step 4: Inspect the Ultrasonic Transducer

The ultrasonic transducer is responsible for creating the mist. Inspect it for any signs of damage or wear. If you notice any cracks in the base of the unit, or the bottom plate pushing out, it may need to be replaced. Contact our customer support for assistance.

Things to Avoid in order to get the most out of your fogger:

    1. Running the unit for more than 8 hours on, one off. 
    2. Using Bleach or other "slimy" additive that can cause an immediate buildup on the discs (Vinegar for cleaning and hydrogen peroxide for water sterilization is recommended) 
    3. Not having the 2 part mist maker float fully seated/ pressed together. This can cause the unit to sit too high out of the water. Partially activating the U-Shaped water level sensor. 
    4. Running in too little water, or running the tank out of water. This can overheat the water as the level drops. The water acts as a heat sink to keep the unit cool. 
    5. Allowing water temp to exceed 105F-120F can shorten the lifespan considerably. Always operate in as much water as possible. Preferably a 27 Gallon container for 6-12 disc units. 
    6. Getting water in the spring area during a disc change. NEVER let any liquid in the spring area. Always dry the unit before maintenance, and remove the discs before long term storage. 
    7. Lifting the unit out of the container by the power cord, or damaging/ manipulating the water level sensor. Do not try to adjust it. 
    8. Pinning the power cord with the lid of your water reservoir. This can cause the unit to lift out of the water at an angle as the water level drops.  
    9. Using distilled water, or very high-quality RO water, or A/C discharge water. TDS below 15PPM, give or take a few, can cause intermittent operation or a stutter and stress the unit. Use salt, calcium carbonate, or cut low TDS water with tap water to increase your TDS level slightly. 
    10.   Leaving the white discs installed while storing the unit long-term after using it. This can leave trapped moisture under the discs which can result in failure. 
    11.    Running more than one fogger in the same tank. This can cause quick disc wear due to electrical interference.   
    12. Cycling the fogger on and off for long periods of time in freezing weather. Heating and cooling of the unit can cause contraction and expansion of the silver transducer and cause problems. Some customers use an aquarium heater to maintain stable water temps as well as help heat the incoming humid air. Do not set the heater for more than 100F. ( see #5 above)
