DIY Humidifier Guide: Build a Custom Humidification System

Creating the perfect indoor environment with a custom DIY humidifier using The House of Hydro’s top-rated ultrasonic mist makers. It's easier than you may think!
Whether you’re a mushroom cultivator, orchid enthusiast, cannabis grower, or hobbyist building a fogger for home or greenhouse humidification, our energy-efficient ultrasonic water foggers deliver ultra-fine mist for optimal humidity control. Ultrasonic foggers create a "dry fog" that is ideal for humidification of sensitive plants and fungi. The dry fog is absorbed quickly into the air and is much less susceptible to promoting mold that can ruin your crop.
Explore easy, step-by-step instructions to build your own DIY humidifier system featuring durable, high-speed, non-stick ceramic discs, waterproof fans, and smart automation options. With the best ultrasonic mist maker technology, achieve precise humidification, promote healthy plant growth, and enhance your DIY fog projects with professional-quality fog output. Start your DIY humidifier build today and experience unmatched misting performance trusted by growers and fog enthusiasts worldwide.

You will only need the following items:

  • A House of Hydro Mist Maker kit. We Stock 1 through 12 Disc Foggers!
  • Waterproof Fan Kit   (120mm is the best option for enclosures over 2'x4'x6' H)
  • Humidistat  (Optional)
  • Mist Output Controller  (Optional)
  • UV Sterilizing Light  (Optional)
  • Auto Fill Float to fill your reservoir  (Optional)
  • 4" or 5" Fan/Duct Adapter Optional)
  • Jig Saw, Razor Knife, or 4.75" hole saw for the 120mm, and 3" Hole saw for the 80mm Fan
  • Philips Head Screwdriver and four 2" outdoor wood screws, or 6-32x2" machined bolts with nuts
  • Silicone Caulk (Optional)
  • Saran Wrap or cooking spray (Optional)
  • plug splitter or power strip if using a humidistat
  • Appropriately sized water reservoir. Many people use a 27 Gallon Tuff Tote for 6 Disc Units and larger. Use no less than a 5 Gallon Bucket for 1 to 5 Disc Units. Always make sure the water level is kept as full as possible to avoid overheating.

How to Build Your Basic or Fully Automated DIY Humidifier

  1. Assemble the Fogger:
Insert the silver ultrasonic fogging transducer into the black float. Connect the transducer plug to the black transformer and tighten the locking ring if applicable. Your fogger is now ready—just place it in water to start misting!

  2. Prepare the Reservoir Lid:
Mark and cut 2 or 3 holes in the water reservoir lid: one or two for fog output and one for the waterproof fans' air input. Most people choose only one output hole, but it must be larger than the fan to run the fan at full speed (4 inches). Any smaller, and you will lose efficiency. Use the fan’s opening as a template for the fan hole, and make the hole with a sharpie.

  3. Add Optional Duct Adapter:
For easy duct attachment to the fan or output holes, use the 120mm air duct adapter. You can use a duct adapter for multiple things. If your humidifier is inside your humidification area, you can use it to attach your fan's intake to a duct and draw fresh air from outside the area. You can use it to easily attach a duct to the lid of your humidifier to transport fog to your humidification area, and also use it to attach your duct to your humidification area. To attach it to things like a Martha Tent, slice an X in the tent that is the same size as the duct adapter, and push it through from the inside.

  1. Mount the Fan:
Secure the fan to the lid with screws or nuts and bolts.

  2. (Optional) Make Silicone Gaskets:

    • Fan Gasket: Apply a thick bead of silicone around the fan hole, cover with Saran Wrap to prevent the fan from sticking, press the fan into place, let the silicone dry, then remove the fan and wrap, leaving a gasket.

    • Lid Gasket: Apply a generous silicone bead around the lid's snap edge, cover with Saran Wrap or coat with cooking spray, close the lid, let the silicone dry, then remove the wrap. These gaskets minimize fog leaks and may not be necessary if minor condensation on the floor isn’t an issue.

  3. Cord Management:
Cut a small notch or install a grommet on the reservoir edge for the power cord. In lieu of a grommet, you can drill an oversized hole to run the cord through, and then wrap the cord with a small piece of closed-cell foam and push it into the hole, allowing it to expand and seal the hole.

  4. Final Assembly:
Place the mist maker in water, cover the reservoir with the lid, and plug it in. The humidifier runs continuously when powered (max recommended runtime: 8 hours on, 1 hour off). You can cycle the fogger with a timer or humidistat. Short runtimes and breaks are ok vs running an 8-hour on 1-hour off cycle.

  5. Control Options:
Make your humidifier fully automated with a Humidistat, a manual Mist Output Controller, or a basic timer.

To Build a Fully Automated Humidifier:

  1. Install Auto-Fill Mini Float Valve:
Drill a hole near the top reservoir wall slightly larger than the float valve threads. Mount the Auto-Fill Mini Float following the water flow direction on the cap. Connect a 1/2" water supply line for automatic refilling.

Note: If spills are unacceptable, add an overflow drain to the reservoir as a safety measure—valve failure is rare but can happen due to mineral buildup over time. If it does eventually happen, it's typically a very slow bypass.

  2. Humidistat Setup:
Connect the mist maker and fan to a GFI power strip or plug splitter, then plug the power strip into the humidistat. This ensures both operate simultaneously when the humidity is low and the humidistat turns on.

  3. Final Setup:
Place the mist maker inside the reservoir and close the lid. Set the humidistat parameters to your desired humidity level. Mount the humidity sensor centrally in your room with the sensor pointed upward, use a rubber band to J-hook the end with the sensor upward so that any condensation that may build on the cord drips away from the sensor.
